Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a plan to substantially modernise the Vietnam Railway Corporation from now to 2010.

 

Under the plan, the Yen Vien-Ngoc Hoi sky railway will be built from the west to the south of Hanoi and Hanoi station will be revamped so as to provide transfer points for more means of transport as well as being a multi-functional services centre.

 

The corporation will co-ordinate with domestic and foreign enterprises to connect railways to seaports, mines, industrial parks and key economic zones in the country.

 

It will also focus investment in building strategic rail routes like high-speed railways from Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City , Lao Cai-Hanoi-Haiphong and upgrade the Dong Dang-Hanoi route.

 

Domestic and foreign training establishments will be employed in training technicians and managers.

 

The corporation has an estimated investment development capital of VND 14.6 trillion (US $912.5 million) in the 2007-1010 period. The sum is aimed to purely at construction and will not cover management and maintenance of railway infrastructure and railway development projects.

 

The corporation plans to transport 20.7 million of passengers and 14.1 million tonnes of goods by 2010.
